I was asked at a conference recently whether student engagement is harder in smaller institutions. Students’ unions in smaller institutions often have a fraction of the budget and income that larger unions do – either because of the overall budget of the institution or the lack of a critical mass for many commercial services. This can have the knock-on impact that students’ unions in smaller institutions often don’t have sabbatical student officers or staff – or if they do, only a small number trying to do everything.
