Distinction and Diversity in Higher Education

Michael Gove’s letter to Ofqual on changes to A Levels

Commenting on Michael Gove’s letter to Ofqual on changes to A Levels, Andy Westwood – CEO of GuildHE – said:

"The Department for Education were right to consult on A Levels and to review their effectiveness in preparing people for degree level study. So while we agree with Michael Gove that some reform of A and AS Levels are necessary, we still believe that A Levels remain broadly fit for purpose.

"It’s disappointing, though, that the Department for Education have chosen to work almost exclusively with the Russell Group on A Level reform as the only proxy for ‘leading universities’. There are a number of important A Levels where specialist universities, colleges and conservatoires should be involved if the highest standards, subject knowledge and successful progression to degree level study are required. The Russell Group are not the only source of knowledge in areas such as drama, music and art, for example."
