Established in 1893, Writtle College, a partner institute of the University of Essex has a regional, national and international reputation as one of the UK's leading specialists institutions of further and higher education. The College offers a range of full and part-time University of Essex Foundation and Honours degrees and Postgraduate programmes.
Subjects available include design, horticulture, floristry, agriculture, conservation and environment, animal and equine studies, sports and exercise performance and business management. Each programme in the higher education division is split into one of the four Schools of Study: School of Design, School of Equine and Animal Science, School of Horticulture and the School of Sustainable Environments.
All Writtle College's degree programmes are validated by the University of Essex, which is ranked among the top ten universities in the UK.
Head of institution: Professor David Butcher
Professor David Butcher joined Writtle College in 2006. Throughout 2006/ 2007 the College undertook a major restructure of management and of governance, resulting in the higher education division being restructured into four new schools; Design, Equine and Animal Science, Horticulture and Sustainable Environments. The restructure of Higher Education has improved the efficiency and direction of the College and has now seen the introduction of a number of new courses for each school.
Professor Butcher has over 30 years experience in land-based education and was formerly Dean of the School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences at Nottingham Trent University. He graduated from Hull University with an Honours degree in Geography, and has since gained a Postgraduate qualification in Geography and Environmental Science and a PhD, which he gained before lecturing at the University of Huddersfield.
