Website: www.bishopg.ac.uk
Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln (BG) offers undergraduate, postgraduate and work-based foundation degree courses, with an emphasis on enriching the lives of students, staff and the local community. BG began life in 1862 as an Anglican teacher training college for women. To mark the centenary in 1962, it was renamed Bishop Grosseteste College in honour of Robert Grosseteste, the thirteenth century scientist, philosopher, educator, and Bishop of Lincoln. In the summer of 2006 the name was changed to Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln after a successful application for taught degree awarding powers. Today the attractive 18-acre site also houses many modern developments, including purpose-built learning and teaching accommodation in the Robert Hardy Building, as well as dedicated facilities for music, science and technology, a theatre, library and a new Sport and Fitness Centre.
Head of institution: Professor Muriel Robinson
Professor Muriel Robinson began her professional life as a primary school teacher and taught for 10 years in inner London, before completing an MA in Language and Literature in Education and moving into the world of teacher education at the University of Brighton. Whilst there, she became increasingly interested in the interplay between media and, as a result, her PhD thesis explored the relationships between reading and television with regard to narrative. After 14 years in a range of roles at Brighton, she was appointed as Vice Principal (Academic Quality) of Newman College and then as Principal of Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln from September 2003. Her research interests remain in the area of media, with particular reference to the competences and confidence of young people and intending teachers, and to the contrasts between the ways different generations engage with new media.
