The University of Winchester has over 5,600 students studying a wide selection of courses ranging from Foundation degrees, Bachelor Honours degrees through to professional development, postgraduate Masters and Research degrees. Programmes of study span the arts, humanities, social sciences, business, education, health and social care. The institution has a long history having first began in 1840 when it was founded by the Church of England. It is located one hour away from London in a pleasant wooded setting overlooking the South Downs in Hampshire.
Head of institution: Professor Joy Carter
Professor Joy Carter was appointed as Vice Chancellor at the University of Winchester in April 2006. Her research field is Environmental Geochemistry and Health and her studies began as a student at the University of Durham before undertaking a PhD at the University of Lancaster.
Prior to joining Winchester, Professor Carter was Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Glamorgan for nearly four years. She also worked as Dean of Science (1999-2002) and Professor of Environmental Geochemistry and Health at the University of Derby, and Reader in Environmental Geochemistry at the University of Reading.
Professor Carter maintains an interest in international research and is currently International President of the Society for Environmental Geochemistry and Health.
As Vice Chancellor, Professor Carter is a member of the Council of Church Universities and Colleges, and a member of Universities UK.
